Maestro Wilson has assembled an outstanding line-up for 2010-2011. The Springfield Symphony Orchestra is center stage in this exceptional line-up of programs and soloists. Be inspired and free your imagination in this exciting flight of fancy we call Soaring Higher!
Masterworks
Peter Stafford Wilson has selected some of the most beloved classical masterworks for these traditional-format concerts. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 and Verdi’s Messa da requiem featuring the Springfield Symphony Chorale stand out in a remarkable line-up. The season also includes Dvorak’s Violin Concerto in A minor, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2 and the Tannhäuser Overture of Richard Wagner.
Light Classics
NightLights concerts are informal programs of light classical music with discussion from the stage about the music and music making. The first NightLights will be a special program - Cirque de la Symphonie. Audiences will be thrilled as aerialists fly overhead and acrobatic feats are performed to classical masterpieces and memorable contemporary music. NightLights II brings such great light classics to the stage as Ponchielli’s Dance of the Hours, Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture, and Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld.
Soloists
The SSO will feature exceptionally talented international and local artists:
•Croatian pianist Martina Filjak is garnering international praise not only for her poetic passion and galvanizing strength at the keyboard, but also for her charismatic personality and magnetic stage presence. Filjak, 2009 Gold Medalist of the Cleveland International Piano Competition, will perform the Schumann Piano Concerto in this bicentennial year of Schumann’s birth.
•Imagine the magic of some of the best cirque artists in the world performing on the same stage with a full symphony orchestra. This is the experience of Cirque de la Symphonie, and it will come to Springfield to be with the Symphony for the first time.
•Wittenberg University’s Trudy Faber will be featured in Handel’s Organ Concerto Op. 4 on an all Baroque program.
•Sujean Kim, Springfield Symphony concertmaster, performs Antonin Dvorak’s Violin Concerto in A minor.
•Principal oboist for the Symphony, Lisa Grove, will have her first feature solo appearance with the orchestra on Francaix’s The Flower Clock.
•The Springfield Symphony Chorale, under the direction of Basil Fett, continues its performances with the Symphony on the monumental Messa da requiem by Verdi.
Opening Notes
Prior to each subscription concert at 7:15 pm, there will be a presentation about the music or the business of making music. These classical conversations are an excellent way to gain a better understanding of the music and the people who perform it.
Performance Preludes
The SSO presents pre-concert ensemble performances in the lobby, also at 7:15 pm. Come early and enjoy the music of chamber ensembles from the region. Refreshments are available for purchase from the concession stand.
