Plans include a parade to kick off the day with local high school bands who will also play the national anthem on the plaza at noon, followed by a local elementary choir fest at 1 p.m. and Manding Jata at 1:30 p.m. on the main stage. Manding Jata profiles the music, dance and oral traditions of the Mande speaking peoples of West Africa. Their performances have been described as a “dazzling display of strength, grace and acrobatics, ” and include drumming, flutes, lute and xylophones. The Springfield Preservation Alliance will feature tours for adult and children of downtown Springfield and the Gammon House Committee will provide tours of the Springfield’s Underground Railroad House.
The day will also include music and dance on two stages, strolling entertainers, a delicious ethnic food court, an international bazaar and activities for children of all ages on the grassy knoll.
