Rolle: Miami Fans Still Mad Over ‘02 Title Game

COLUMBUS — The 2002 National Championship game at the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on January 1, 2003, is still, some seven-and-a-half years later, a source of pride and fond memories for many Ohio State fans. It was then that the Buckeyes ended their 34-year drought and reclaimed the top spot among college football with a 14-0 perfect record. Names like Maurice Clarett, Craig Krenzel, and Michael Jenkins still bring smiles to many fans.
HAMILTON — It wasn’t the opening game that anyone involved with the Springfield football program — fan, player, and coach alike — hoped for. But, it was reality for the Wildcats, and it came in the form of a 14-6 season-opening loss to the Hamilton Big Blue at Virgil Schwarm Stadium in Hamilton on Friday, August 27. It came in the form of a sloppy game, one in which Springfield turned the ball over five times and lacked consistency on offense.

Buckeyes Eyeing Sixth-Straight Big Ten Title

COLUMBUS — It’s not secret that Big Ten football in the last decade, especially the last half of it, was dominated by the Ohio State Buckeyes. Ohio State has either shared or won the conference title out-right every year since 2005, and they’ve taken most of the conference’s headlines in the national media, either good or bad.

Browning Expects Improved O-Line

COLUMBUS — Oh the woes of the offensive line. It’s often the most overlooked part of a football team — except when things are going awry. It can be a thankless job as well — you don’t touch the ball that much, so you hardly ever get the accolades from fans the ‘skill’ offensive players do. All of these are things that Ohio State offensive lineman Bryant Browning pointed out during the Big Ten Media Days on August 3 in Chicago about his position. However, he said, he wouldn’t want to be playing any other position.

Hoskins Resigns From Springfield High

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield High School head boys basketball coach Darnell Hoskins said during an interview last Thursday, August 5, that he is resigning from his position at Springfield High School to take the same position at Thurgood Marshall High School in Dayton.
SPRINGFIELD — The seas around Trey DePriest’s annoucement have calmed a week after the highly-touted linebacker recruit choose the University of Alabama. Springfield High School began official high school practice with the rest of the state last Monday, August 2, and focus has turned towards the “task at hand,” as DePriest put it during his press conference at the Buffalo Wild Wings on N.  Fountain Avenue on July 30.
SPRINGFIELD — The decision had been expected for months, but Trey DePriest said he had only made his up his mind within the week before his announcement. “I just made up my mind earlier this week,” DePriest said in an exclusive interview with The Springfield Paper. “Just a couple of days ago I really made up my mind. I had good [conversations] with a lot of people and decided this would be the best fit for me.”

DePriest Stands Apart From Other Athletes

SPRINGFIELD — It was April 10, 2010 — the day after Springfield two-sport athlete B.J. Bush’s birthday. The Springfield baseball squad was in the last inning in a game with Tecumseh — which they went on to win 10-1 — and Trey DePriest, who had played both football and baseball with Bush for three years, was notifying teammates and coaches of where he was going to celebrate his friend’s birthday.
“We’re going to go to ‘bdubs’ at about 5,” DePriest said, referring to every teenager’s favorite restaurant, Buffalo Wild Wings.
SPRINGFIELD — Two failed levies have not deterred the Northeastern Local School District. In fact, Northeastern has one last chance to receive state funding for new buildings, and it all depends on the voters. A special election will take place this Tuesday, August 3, for all Northeastern Local residents to vote on the district’s proposed 7.876 mills property tax that will provide all remaining necessary funding for Northeastern to construct and/or refurbish schools in their district.
