Lights, camera, action. The animals are packed on the train. The clowns and acrobats have settled in for the long ride from the shores of Lake Erie to glitz and glamour of Miami, Florida and South Beach.
Lebron is leaving with the “heart” of Cleveland packed neatly away with his MVP awards, as he announced last week that he’ll be joining the Miami Heat next season on an hour-long television special to much fan fare. And there are many reasons why you shouldn’t care.
Number one, peeps, it is the NBA.
I have taken several shots over the years from being less than interested in a “sport” dominated by egotistical athletic giants. Last season however, I caved into pressure and watched quite a bit of the NBA. The end result of my wasted time was that I could have tuned into the last two minutes of every game and not missed anything; time I could have put to better use watching “The Kardashians” or “Cheaters”.
By the end of the season, I knew at least who was playing and a little of their strengths and weaknesses. Then I hit the wall, which came in game five of the semi-finals between the Cavaliers and Boston Celtics. When I saw James quit in that game, I knew the door was open and he was gone… or should be. Pack up his spineless body and get out.
Hey peeps, it is the NBA, and do you really care?
Number two, did the “King Quitter” really rip the heart out of Cleveland? We all know better than that: NO! From Art Modell to bankruptcy to rivers on fire, Cleveland has had some rough times. Forget Lebron and move on! The sun will come up tomorrow, and the Cavs’ will have to go down a different road. Did Cleveland ever win the big one with “King Quitter?”
Number three, this was all media driven. The “talking heads” specifically at ESPN never tired of pointing out this was the best summer ever for the NBA with all this press, which is like saying summer NFL camps for the Browns and Bengals are the best for them because they are not playing. When the ball is shot at the hoop when it counts, are the majority of the fans in this country going to care about the four or five elite NBA teams and the terrible remainder? What all of this amounted to was better advertising revenues for ESPN and another stupid move by the NBA. At the least they should have learned from MLB.
Number four, get out your favorite crystal ball. History tells us that “King Quitter, DuuWayne and KaBosh” will not coexist in their magical world for long. Their ego’s and a lingering memory of taking less money will eat away at all of this.
In the meantime, dust off your Lakers gear!
