With rugby being the newest addition to the 2016 Olympics, many think its a new sport in America. The fact is, rugby has around in the Miami Valley since the mid 1960's in both the University and Senior Club level. In Springfield, specifically, it has a history at Wittenberg since the late 60's/early 70's. Now it has a new chapter of history in the form of Springfield's first U19 (High School) team supported by the Dayton Area Rugby Club.
The Dayton Area Rugby Club has a long history of supporting youth rugby with many of its teams making deep runs into the State Playoffs with the last one coming just 2 years ago where they won the SW Ohio Championship and finished 7th in State. With two local high school students and a coach on the Dayton U19 team from last year all from Springfield, and an overwhelming growing interest from local high schoolers, the decision was made to start up a Springfield team this year.
We are calling this team The Reapers from Springfield's past because William Whiteley's Champion Reaper was the lifeblood of the city's manufacturing and economy for decades. We want to tie Springfield's history with the one of the fastest growing sports in America....the past with the future. If you or any high school boys you know (all high schools welcome) grades 9th-12th are interested in playing rugby or have any questions go to www.daytonrugby.com/u19springfield or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
