WARREN COUNTY, OH – (July 1, 2010) – Warren County Sports is assisting with an event which will bring economic impact to the area and raise awareness about ovarian cancer. Fit to Fight Ovarian Cancer Multisport Festival on July 18 at Corwin M. Nixon Park in Mason will include several races and opportunities in which the whole family may participate.  The event has consisted of a triathlon for the past two years, with a Women’s only race, a Men’s only race and a Kid’s only race.  For 2010, a Duathlon option and a 5K run/walk have been added to make participation accessible for all levels of fitness.

The women-only Triathlon and Duathlon kicks off the day at 7:30 a.m. The 5k run and walk starts at 8 a.m. The men’s Triathlon and Duathlon starts at 9 a.m. followed by the kids’ triathlon at 11a.m.

“Warren County Sports previously hosted the USA Triathlon (USAT) National Duathlon Festival for three years and we hope to help the organizers of Fit to Fight grow this event by leveraging our past experience,” said Phil Smith, President & CEO of the Warren County Convention & Visitors Bureau (WCCVB). “This year we expect the event will generate 175 room nights, 1,150 participants and spectators, and an estimated $190,000 economic impact but it has the potential to grow to an 800 to 1,000 room-night event in the next few years.”

Proceeds from the day will benefit the Barrett Cancer Center at the University of Cincinnati and the Northern Kentucky Chapter of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC).

Elyse Jarard, Fit to Fight founder, fitness professional and owner of Venus Fitness for Her in Montgomery became inspired to raise funds and awareness of the disease after losing two young friends to ovarian cancer.

“This event is dedicated to the fighting spirit of the women who have died from this disease, and to inspire women and men to be healthy and strong,” stated Jarard. “This year’s event has been designed to take away all the excuses and involve the entire family, no matter what their level of fitness.  Fit people tend to be more in tune with their bodies.  Ovarian cancer is a very subtle and deadly disease so if you’re not paying attention, it creeps up on you. ”

According to the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, “ovarian cancer is the deadliest of all gynecological cancers”.  With early detection, survival is as high as 90%, but women often are not aware of the disease’s symptoms or are quick to dismiss them.
