Mother Goose and Grimm’s Grimmy will grace the uniforms of area Boy Scouts attending the National Jamboree in Fort AP Hill from July 26 through Aug. 4. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Boy Scouting, commemorative patches may also be purchased by the public to help fund the troop’s trip to the Jamboree. To recognize the centennial, Mike Peters creator and cartoonist of Mother Goose and Grimm, and associate Ben Keirn, worked with Tecumseh Council to create two council patches featuring Grimmy in a prominent role.

At the National Scout Jamboree (NSJ), patch trading is a fun tradition and councils from across the country put together patches that represent something unique from their area and celebrate the event.  Since Mike Peters was living in Beavercreek Ohio (part of Tecumseh Council) at the time he created, and the Dayton Daily News syndicated, the Mother Goose and Grimm comic strip it seemed like a logical choice.  Grimmy is a well known and loved cartoon character and should be a patch this is quite the rage at the Jamboree.

The original concept came when Kent Rosenbaum, Tecumseh Council Jamboree Scoutmaster, tasked Rich Diesslin, local cartoonist and scouter, to work with the troop to develop some patch ideas.  One evening Rich and his son Neil were brainstorming ideas that would represent the local area remembering that New York councils have used Marvel super heros, Michigan used Cereal Box characters and from the West was the always popular Yoda patch.  Then they realized that Mother Goose and Grimm began locally by the well known editorial cartoonist, Mike Peters.  Grimmy seemed like the perfect fit, since Mike lived in Beavercreek during the time he created the comic strip.  So, on a whim they asked Mike Peters and he enthusiastically agreed to the idea.  Mike’s assistant Ben Keirn then worked with Rich Diesslin to design the two patches featuring Grimmy and the rest is history.
