Springfield, OH – The pronouncer announces the word, the team spellers’ huddle to commit to spelling the word pronounced. The word may be a word you are familiar with or never heard of, the team may ask the pronouncer for a definition or use the word in a sentence. The team then takes a few minutes to deliberate and one team member steps up to the podium to pronounce and spell the word given correctly. If the word is misspelled watch out as the bee flies in to eliminate that team’s identifying balloons. This marked occasion is descriptive of the upcoming 13th Annual Literacy Sting, hosted by Altrusa International Club of Springfield.
Everyone attending will definitely learn at least one new word during the event and experience a few spelling surprises. With the proceeds from this event, Altrusa supports the cause of improving literacy throughout the county and especially contributes to the Warder Literacy Center which provides tutoring programs for adults and children and English for speakers of other languages.
Community businesses and organizations can join in the fun by providing a team of three people and paying a registration fee of . Two of the team members are required to be part of the organization represented and the third member can be the best speller they are able persuade to help them. Lunch is provided for the team. Supporters and interested spectators can purchase lunch tickets from an Altrusa member or at the door.
Altrusa is a non-profit organization of business and professional women whose focus is literacy and community service. The club meets monthly and welcomes new members. The club’s Literacy projects include, the annual Literacy Sting, the Hook-a-Book game which provides free books for children at neighborhood festivals and gatherings and the SCRABBLE® Scramble.
