Dayton History is pleased to announce the 1938 Alfa Romeo 308C, which raced in the Indy 500 will be on display at the Dayton Concours d’Elegance. September 2, 2010 - A 1938 Alfa Romeo 308C, which raced four times in the Indianapolis 500, will be shown at the fourth Dayton Concours d’Elegance at Carillon Park presented by AAA Miami Valley on Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010.  Alfa Romeo is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2010 and is one of the featured marques for the Concours.

One of only four Alfa Romeo 308 C Grand Prix cars built, it was designed and built under the guidance of Enzo Ferrari, who managed the Alfa Romeo racing team at the time.

At Indianapolis, the car finished 17th in 1940, driven by Chet Miller.  After World War II, it returned to the historic oval where it finished 6th in 1946 driven by Louis Durant, 7th in 1947 driven by Walt Brown and 8th in 1948 driven by Johnny Mauro.

While the car never lead a lap, it was running at the finish of all four races, and was only out of the top 10 during its first race.

The red single seater is powered by a supercharged straight eight cylinder Alfa Romeo engine and qualified for the 500 mile race at an average speed of 121.7 mph in 1948.

The racecar is owned and displayed by the Indianapolis 500 Hall of Fame Museum and is being loaned to the Concours by the Hall of Fame Museum.

The car will be on display during the Concours Preview Party on Saturday, Sept. 18 and during the Concours on Sunday, Sept. 19th.

The Concours will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday and will also feature live entertainment, an automotive art pavilion; sponsor exhibits and a variety of local food and beverages. All exhibits at the park will be open. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children 3-17 with children under 3 free. A commemorative program is included with admission. Tickets for the Preview Party and Concours are on sale now at Carillon Historical Park.

All proceeds from the event will benefit Dayton History, Montgomery County’s official historical organization. The organization boasts multiple campuses in the greater Dayton, Ohio area: Carillon Historical Park, Hawthorn Hill, Old River Park, the Paul Laurence Dunbar State Memorial, the Patterson Homestead, the Old Court House, Memorial Hall and the Archive Center.  Dayton History brings the past to life to understand the present and inspire the future by collecting, preserving, interpreting, presenting, and promoting the region’s past.
